City Girl, Southern Bride Part 3: The Tasting

Chicken and Waffle appetizer

Chicken and waffles on a stick?!

I honestly had a hard time deciphering whether our tasting was in fact a tasting or a full on catered event. Chef Matt Hayden and the Scratch Events team cut no corners at our shabby chic wedding preview and tasting. It was impossible not to envision how successfully tasty our wedding is going to be!

If you’ve read as many blogs as I have on tastings you’re probably as exhausted as I was absorbing all of the things to expect when meeting with your wedding caterer. Skip the lists. Here’s what to expect from Dayton’s premier wedding caterer.

A Shabby Chic/Country Wedding seems like a no brainer when it comes to food, but if you’re looking to give your guests more of a unique experience you’ll want to be clear about what is you’re looking for. For us, it was country comfort with an upscale twist.  The amazing menu put together by Chef Matt was no standard tasting. With every bite I found myself even more excited for our big day! Here’s a little detail to whet the appetite.

Cocktail Hour & Appetizers

  • Grilled Vegetable Crudité
  • Fried Chicken & Waffles
  • Pork Belly & Grits

A moment a silence for the best dang grits I’ve ever had. It was spiritual, I promise.

  • Sweet Tea
  • Unsweetened Tea
  • Lemonade

We’ve got a unique plan for booze. I’m not giving away all of our secrets, but be sure to ask Chef Matt about signature cocktails.

Main Course

  • Mee Maw’s Salad
  • Brown Butter Braised Beef
  • Chicken Brie Scallopini
  • Whipped Red Skin Potatoes
  • Sautéed Green Beans

If you need any reassurances about food quality, you will be thrilled with the flavors and presentation that Chef Matt and team put together. Don’t be shy though. If you want to make changes or have questions, the team at Scratch Events has been so flexible and helpful throughout this entire process.

During the sampling, I felt as though I was presented with exactly what my future husband and I – as well as our guests – will experience on our wedding day. A huge weight off my chest because after eight months of planning, I can understand how some brides to be could easily reach the point of becoming a bridezilla. It’s rough, it’s wonderful and amazing, but there’s so much detail that goes in to planning your special day. Finding a top notch caterer with a unique perspective for shabby weddings was like finding a golden egg.

With Scratch Events the process is easy. If you want some advice from an offbeat bride to be that doesn’t follow the traditional way of doing anything in life – here are some tips from me.

Think Outside of the Box

Be creative. Add a unique experience to your wedding by incorporating foods you love. Whether it’s ideas from your favorite restaurant or family recipes, give emotion to your menu by adding a sentimental touch.  Whether it’s seasonal favorites or local fare, get creative. Remember, this is your story. Have fun.

Be Flexible

I have a hard time with advice but in this scenario, I would say absolutely take it. Let the professionals help. Ask questions, take notes, ask more questions.

Come Prepared

I found it extremely helpful to list out all of the questions I had prior to the tasting, make sure to consider the needs of your guests specifically with regard to special dietary needs or food allergies.

Provide Feedback

They don’t bite. If you’re not feeling something – speak up. Odds are your caterer will rebound quickly from your opinion and blow your mind with another great idea within in minutes.

Remember – it’s all about the yum factor and the experience. If you’re looking for impeccable taste, a unique approach, great value and exceptional service – Scratch Event Catering is worth a nibble. Most importantly though – don’t forget to have fun. In a sea of opinions (which I’m pretty sure you’ll experience) don’t forget whose matter most: yours & your caterers.
